How can we contribute to nurture the human-nature symbiotic relationship on Planet Earth? Lab Project is an experimental and creative platform, connecting research, ideas and concepts to create meaningful outcomes.
Lab Project experimental research and creative platform
Lab Project runs parallel to Living Art practice. Born as an experimental platform, in which artist Marta Ferracin visualises her research and work in progress, it aims to exchange ideas and technical solutions between creatives who are specialised in sound, science, biology, technology engineering and in any skills related to Ferracin individual project.
Lab Project is composed of a freelance team that works with the artist on a project-by-project basis, to deepen and expand her research.
Lab Project long term research process consists of several years of research and daily field observations. Ferracin deliberately chooses organisms that are not yet classified by science thus independent from human’ interventions such as lichens or natural phenomena with ecological and environmental endings.
Lab Project experimentation and research is to contribute to nurture the human-nature symbiotic relationship on planet Earth by highlighting similarities between human and more-than-human biological identities. Thus, stimulating a feeling of care, awe and respect towards the autonomous agency of living matter.
Current research
Moths positive phototaxis phenomena explores a phenomenon known as positive phototaxis by monitoring moths’ moonlight trajectory. It involves insect biodiversity, program engineering, videoscapes, observatory moth stations, poetic narrative and cosmology. Outdoor and indoor Living Art project.
Buzz pollination monitores flowers that are releasing pollen by responding to the frequencies of bees. The project involves sonification (buzz pollination), flowers and synthetic bees’ frequencies sounds, climate change and the importance of pollination for the foodplants and sustainability. Outdoor and indoor Living Art project.
Colours lichens versus climate adaptation focuses onto lichens adaptation to changes in temperature and UV via colours. Involved are Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) used in chemistry, lichen dies, DNA barcoding, sentient pigments, climate change adaptation. Indoor Living Art project.
Within a 2x1x2 metre field biodiversity is monitoring biodiversity within a small area of the surroundings. It involves daily observation of biodiversity, visual journaling in relation to seasons, weather and climate (phenology wheel) and narrative. Outdoor and indoor Living Art project.
